No Resolutions

I had a tough time getting up for work this morning and got out of the house late, but still made it in without any trouble. The old server must have died from a power issue or something, because Heaven caught me right off the bat with an internet issue. I just need to get them off of the old domain controller.

The rest of the day was fairly focused on cleaning up the user directory for the menial task of unified email signatures. Organization on the front end would have made this a two click fix, but that is not the way of things. I had an anxiety attack somewhere along the way and contemplated tracking dates and times for those.

I had sort of been planning to go to Arby’s sometime this week, and today seemed as good a day as any. They were packed, but I found a table to eat. Joel came by in the afternoon to tell me they were cutting everyone loose at 2:30.

Eaddie was making Oreo balls with Eli when we got back to the house. Summer came home and took a bath while I took Muad’Dib on a run. I wanted to take him to PetSmart, but by the time Summer got ready and we made it to the store, they were closing up for the night. We went to Point Remove instead, and played cards over some pizza.

The kids were gone to a party when we got back to the house. I gave Muad’Dib a good bath before we went to see my parents. Mom was asleep the whole time, but we had some sparkling wine with Dad. We visited for a short while before going back to the house where the kids finished the series finale of Stranger Things. Summer went to bed and I finished the essentials.

Deal With It

Eaddie left early this morning, dressed up for something. Summer and I had coffee and then started to reset the living room. We had an appointment to take Muad’Dib for pictures with Santa, but then Summer told me she wanted to have Autumn come over to decorate cookies and we ended up unpacking a lot of other stuff instead.

I cancelled the appointment and took a shower late, but then Eaddie and Eli came to the house and we met them at PetSmart where we could just walk up to what was one of the worst Santas I’ve ever seen. They were informal to say the least, but they gave him a little treat and snapped a couple poor pictures with my phone. Then we wandered the store for a little bit to see if Muad’Dib wanted a treat. He sniffed the bones a little bit, but all he really wanted was a guinea pig, and Summer wouldn’t let him have one. I suggested that if we got two, he could have unlimited treats for free, but that didn’t work either.

We took him outside to take a break from all the excitement for a little bit, and then we ended up going to Point Remove with the kids. We got a large charcuterie board, some drinks, and eventually a pizza. I saw Amber and Brian there for a Christmas party they were having for their runners club, and one of the ladies came down and convinced Summer to sign up for a membership or something.

Muad’Dib was perfect under the table and off the leash the whole time. I took him outside, and he was perfectly behaved the entire time. People loved his ugly sweater and Max antler. We were there for a little while because they were quite busy with a couple parties going, and seemingly very understaffed.

When we finally got back to the house, I cleaned up some more stuff to set up the living room. Summer went to bed. I wasn’t very motivated, and I couldn’t find my two longest speaker wires anyway, but I got a little bit done. Afterward I did some more reviews and had an anxiety attack before bed..

Croc-a-doodle Doo

We had a decent day today. I bounced between a couple things, but didn’t get really deep into anything until the afternoon. Muad’Dib has been consistently using his bed, which made me happy. We went to Arby’s to try their steak nuggets, and they were absolute garbage. I got one nugget that was on the small side of acceptable, and then two that were too small, plus some crumbs to make up the last two. They tasted like cheap, air-fried beef, and I expected more from them.

I had gotten in to some Traverse mail settings before lunch, and continued that into the afternoon. I had an anxiety attack sometime, I think after lunch, as well. Then we rode home and went on a quick run. Summer had some baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and broccoli for dinner that turned out really good, and then the girls wrapped some presents before splitting up for bed.

I was a bit scattered, but notably I accidentally hopped into a Discord voice channel with Clint and Josh for a moment and talked to them without a microphone. Then I discovered that the limited edition Microsoft Windows XP Crocs were available to the public, so I ordered a couple of those. Ebay had some that sold recently for a pretty good profit, but I won’t mind having a pair to wear and a pair to keep if the price tanks.

What a throwback between Windows XP and Command and Conquer.

60% of Postmodern Jukebox

Summer left for a race in Vilonia this morning. I tried to sleep in a little bit since I would be driving late, but still had to get up and clean my car for the trip. First, I made some eggs over sourdough, and then made some for Summer as she came in. Then I stripped the seat cover out of the back of my car and did a deep clean with a vacuum and a blower, washed the windows, and wiped down all of the surfaces to try and keep Mom from having an allergic reaction.

I finally had a chance to take my shower, then took Muad’Dib for a quick and early run before we went to pick up my parents. We barely made it to Ozark before Summer had to stop. I went ahead and charged partway so we could get up to Viet Buffet in Rogers and then back down. I was worried there would be a wait, but we actually got right in. Everyone really enjoyed it, and though it wasn’t all just like Mom made, it was probably the most authentic I had seen anywhere, and they had all the greats.

From there, we made it to the Ozark Music Hall and actually got to park right outside. The concert was far from sold out, but the seats I got us on the balcony were right behind a speaker on stage-right. About a third, to a half of the stage was covered up, and I was livid. We probably could have gone down to the floor, but Mom didn’t want to move. Summer and I ended up moving to the empty reserved section right next to us at the end of the stage. Nobody said a word to us, and we could finally see the show.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy it, and since we were able to charge while we were at the show, we were able to make it all the way home without stopping. We dropped my parents off at home, then Summer dove straight into bed. Eaddie had given Muad’Dib a bath, but he seemed to be shedding some dandruff or crumbs of some kind, so I wanted to give him another one. I ended up getting frustrated at a bunch of little things that were left undone, and gave up for the night.

What a bunch of geezers.

Dogtown

Summer and I happened to end up in traffic around the same time, as there had been a wreck and vehicle fire right outside of Morrilton. She continued on to Little Rock and I got to work right around eight. Janice brought a tiny little goblin dog to work, so Muad’Dib had fun running around with her. We were up and down the stairs several times and stayed really busy all day.

PetSmart called early in the morning and wanted to move Muad’Dib’s appointment up an hour, citing that they were really busy leading up to Thanksgiving, and that they wanted to make sure he had plenty of time away from other people and dogs. It didn’t make much sense to me, since I figured an appointment time was just for him, but from the sound of it, they do several dogs at once in batches, and then kennel them between steps. It didn’t make much sense to me, but luckily I remembered that Summer would be passing back through. I had her pick him up and take him home, and then Eaddie delivered him to PetSmart at three.

I grabbed a quick lunch at McDonald’s and then continued David’s quest to learn how to import documents. I got a call about an hour and a half earlier than I expected, telling me that Muad’Dib was about finished, so I headed back home to get him. They said he did well, but I was actually disappointed in how much I paid for such a short service. We probably won’t be doing that again.

Summer said something about going to the store when she got off work, so I thought I’d go with her. When I got home, the kids had eaten two of the three steaks and left me one, and Summer none. I took Muad’Dib on a quick run, and he absolutely flew down the street. When we got back, I learned that at some point, Summer thought to eat the rest of the squash, which left me with a slab of meat and literally nothing else. The kids went with her to the store, so Muad’Dib and I went to Taco Villa.

They had my taco salad made quickly, and I didn’t notice when he followed me in the door, but we got back outside and ate at a picnic table in the cold. It was nice to decompress. Afterward, we went by the old house to look for a few things. Dad had emptied the cabinets, but I was lucky enough to find one of the things I was looking for.

When we got back to the house, Eaddie told me that they weren’t going to see Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox with us because she just learned that they wanted to record for the Tech band album they’re releasing. I tried to talk to her about commitments, but that fell on deaf ears, and nobody around here is willing to put family over anything else.

Well I guess if you want to be alone, be alone

Nix

Things seemed really quiet today. Joel came by in the morning to ask about an email that disappeared from his inbox, and we never quite figured that one out. I spent most of the day reading up some more, and eventually spinning up a Ubuntu VM. We took a break to try the Buffalo ranch chicken sandwich at McDonald’s, and it was depressingly small. Lucky(?) for me, they made my first one wrong and they remade a new one for me, so I got to eat both, which together was still barely the size of a chicken sandwich from any other restaurant.

I bot Ubuntu updated just before leaving, and Muad’Dib and I went out on a quick run as soon as we got back into town. Dad was out, but we visited Mom, then came back to the house and I ate some leftover burrito stuff with chips instead of tortillas, since we were out. Everyone was quick to bed, but I worked on reviews all night.

This is vine.

Ice Cold

I continued to doze on and off this morning, slipping in and out of different dreams. Summer wandered the house loudly until I got up to some breakfast. She started to cook some bacon, but then left the stove on with nothing on the burner while she went to the bathroom. I got up and put the bacon on, but then she came out and took over to scramble some eggs for me. They came out grey and wet because she scrambled them with pepper. Afterward, we moved the couch so we could vacuum the other half of the living room, and then Summer had to mop the floors because she didn’t pay attention to all the mud in the back yard when she let Muad’Dib out.

I worked on some reviews and then started to get cleaned up so I could at least go to Eaddie’s pregame show. Summer left first, and then I got my socks wet because Summer didn’t dry the floors after she wet mopped, so I just stayed home. That was when I discovered the mini fridge had frozen up around a few cans, which subsequently froze, bloated, and leaked everywhere. I started to clean that up and let it defrost while I vacuumed behind what Summer had done. No surprise, there was still a bunch of that fine powder all in the carpet.

Hours went by as I cleaned, and eventually I quit to take Muad’Dib out on a run. It was pretty cold out, so he did great to run the whole time. We went to Ridgewood and had a Frito chili pie, and then ran into Eric and Carlie as we left. We made it to see my parents, and then got back to the house where Summer was warming up in a bath.

I was pretty exhausted and exhasperated by then, so it was an early, early night to bed.

I’d Rautha Not

I took Muad’Dib in this morning with his little rodeo accessory, and everyone loved it. Unfortunately it just didn’t fit right, so he didn’t wear it for most of the day. I also had him wear an e-collar since he’s gotten into the habit of running off uncontrollably. He behaved much better today for our several trips up and down the stairs.

I also buckled him up while I went in for lunch, since I didn’t want him crawling all over the car and tearing something up. The afternoon was long and tiring, but we eventually got home. Summer was there, not feeling well. We went out for an early run, but then things got a little huskier.

We got to the end of the street and encountered a white and tan husky on the loose. They charged at each other and then ran in circles around me. Muad’Dib was fairly well minding, but the stranger was really skittish around me. I got a pet or two in, but otherwise he would cower and run away. He followed us back to the house where I had Summer meet us outside. It took some work, but once she came back out with a bowl of food, he came right up to us and followed us into the back yard.

He was super friendly from that point on, but had a ton of hair coming off in big tufts as though he had never been brushed, or even petted. He also had super long toenails like he had never been outside to walk, or even roam around freely. He was really skinny under all that fur, and showed a bit of bone. We needed to get to walking though, so I decided to leash him and see if we could find anyone who recognized him.

We made it all the way around to my parents’ house, where Mom scolded me for picking up another dog. They were talking with someone about replacing their windows, so we left. We got all the way back to the house when we rounded the corner and were approached in the dark by a lime green Jeep Renegade. A skinny, shirtless, white guy smoking a cigarette eyeballed us through his window, so I asked if he knew the dog. He nodded, and reached behind himself to try and open his back door from the inside. He gestured to put the dog in, again without words. I suggested he step outside since I didn’t want to take my leash and collor off the dog without securing him in some way. As soon as he opened the door, the dog cowered and tried to get away. I asked where he lived, and he pointed down the street where we found him. Then he loaded up and drove away.

Feeling pretty awful about the entire experience, I went inside and called the police, who basically told me to call Animal Control during business hours. I wrote a long email to them before going to bed, but I doubt anything comes of it.

Fall of Man

We went all the way across town for a smoothie this morning, and that McDonald’s was way busier than the other one. I don’t know if it was the timing or location, but I thought it would be a shorter and faster detour. We got to work and had a bit of productivity in the morning until I started reading more of my predecessor’s old ChatGPT logs.

At this point, I am completely convinced that Brandon was not real. He was not human. He was an alien, or some kind of lizard person with primative knowledge of our species. I’ve seen the memes about AI, but I could never imagine such intense and immediate reliance on “artificial intelligence” for literally every aspect of seemingly everything he was doing. Every email, every presentation, and every written interaction from him was constructed by ChatGPT. He didn’t even write his own “heartfelt” resignation letter to the company. It was entirely crafted by ChatGPT. What really sent me over the edge was the fact that he asked it to “tell me about 4th of July.” He asked about things that should have been muscle memory for anyone that has been even tangentially interested in IT as a hobby, much less as a career.

Flabberghasted, we went to McDonald’s to decompress. I took the whole hour.

The afternoon wasn’t much to speak of. I wrote some more documentation. I wrote it myself. I didn’t ask ChatGPT to write it for me. That’s what I got from Brandon. Literally a roadmap written by AI to tell me how our network is set up. Even I know what a /24 subnet is. Asinine.

We ran into traffic on the way home and took the Atkins exit just in time to pass Summer, who was stuck due to a wreck ahead of us. I took Highway 64 the whole way home and beat her by just a couple minutes. She had a “beef stroganoff” with meatballs going in the slow cooker all day, so I took Muad’Dib for a quick run and made it back to eat outside with the girls. Eaddie left again for band, Summer went to bed, and I did a bit of cleanup before crashing myself.

This is how AI takes our jobs – not directly, but by empowering those that are simply not qualified for the jobs they conned themselves into.

On Worth

Summer had to work today. I slept in for quite a while, nearly straight through the entire night, for the first time since I can remember. I eventually got up, ate the last leftover hamburger, showered, and met up with Mark to finish up networking his new computers. It started raining before we left, and Muad’Dib and I got back to the house just as Summer was finishing up her bath.

We sat outside with her on the porch for just a moment while it rained. The kids were at an away game all day. We spent a minimal amount of time together, and then I went back to my computer, frustrated on multiple fronts by failing functions. I eventually got some laundry going while Summer appeared to be falling asleep.
