Well I don’t want to see you waiting.

Zach griped at me this morning for wasting my time playing with a Firefox deployment I made yesterday. I just need experience fighting with some of this stuff so I can get better at it. There’s always time for work orders later.

Jason texted and asked if I wanted to go to Las Palmas for lunch, so when he and Ben got back to the shop, we met Dale there. My taco salad was hot and fresh, but there’s no denying that the key lime candy at the register was my favorite part.

After lunch, I went to the junior high for a little bit, but ended up leaving to take care of some work back at Oakland before ultimately ending the day at the junior high. Autumn got rained out of color guard at the game, but Eaddie was upset that she wouldn’t get to watch TV at my house, so I took the girls home with me while Summer went to the gym. Josh met me there just long enough to hand over the laptop I picked up for Summer, and the girls settled in for an episode of Criminal Minds.

When Summer got to the house, we went to Burger King for the best family deal coupon in town. I had more burgers than heads for under 20 bucks. We just happened to be on the Halloween episode of The Office, so we watched that before the girls went home for the night. Then I finished laundry and headed to bed myself.

I’m wasting my time agaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnnn!

Sew Much to Pack

I slept really well last night, and stayed that way until almost noon today. When I finally got out of bed, I packed things up and headed home to clean up a bit before Josh came over to check out his laptop I had repaired for him. Both hungry, we went to Denny’s for a late lunch and chatted for quite a while. The food was really good, but also really slow to come out, so it was fortunate we were just killing time being social.

When he dropped me back off at home, I took a shower and then played some Rocket League with him once he got home. We did pretty well until we didn’t, and I still don’t have a placement in ranked duos yet. Once we lost a couple games, he was ready to call it quits for the day, so I decided to sew up the mismade velcro patch on my new backpack. I felt like I did a pretty good job on it, but as I was trying to tie a knot to finish the whole project, the thread got caught up in something, and I ended up having to just cut off all of the excess without knotting it properly. I don’t think it’ll be a problem though, since the whole thing just gets tied up in the hooks of the velcro.

I spent quite a while unpacking all of my old daily cary stuff and sort through the new swag to decide what I wanted to put in the pack. I’m still not completely sold on how I have it arranged, but it’ll do for now. I’ll probably make some changes once I’ve had a chance to use it at work for a while. I was mostly surprised to see there wasn’t any organization for pens, or any small, vertical pouches.

Summer finally got back into town after her quiz bowl tournament, picked Eaddie up, then came over for a bit before having to run home to get Eaddie showered and changed into some new clothes. Summer passed out as soon as they got back and had a bite to eat, and Eaddie started watching Arrow while I cleaned up from all of my packing.

So I guess I collect koozies now.

They’re Missing the Point

“The whole point of the conference is to get us out of there and get away from the work orders and the teachers.” Quote of the day, and at least one of the themes for the whole day. Jason was clearly only there so he could not be at work. Some may be puzzled by how this might make any difference at all.

Classes started at 8:30 for real this morning, so I grabbed breakfast and headed into my classes. I was really disappointed by two out of three today, with the first being mostly a sales meeting, or at the very least an introduction to what they do sell. The second class was actually pretty good, though not necessarily very useful since we don’t actually have any Extreme equipment. The third was another dud only because it was an hour class on how to perform fewer than six steps. I don’t even know why it was a class. It could have been almost anything else.

The lunch was buffet-style this time, and pretty awesome. Fried pork chops and baked chicken with tons of extras. It was way better than yesterday, and the carrot cake for dessert was awesome. I failed to win any door prizes, so we headed home right after lunch. I dropped Jason off at his house, then merged back onto the interstate right next to Dale and Allen. I think Heather and Gary left quite a bit earlier in the day, but I don’t know when.

When I got back into town, I decided to stop by the shop to talk to Ben and Zach. Zach got his Pixel 3 XL in, and it seemed pretty nice, but he didn’t seem too keen on handling it much. I’ll get some more time with it once it’s in a case. Once he left work, I headed home to unpack before eventually making it to Summer’s. She had me take her to the football game to be honored for quiz bowl during halftime, and then we came right back home where I unpacked my stuffed swag backpack before bed.

The point is to learn something that you can bring back and share with the department.

ACOT 2018

Everything was pretty well organized for me to leave this morning, so I headed home to shower and feed the fish, then packed and left for work. I had a bit more testing in the morning, and then I took care of as many work orders as I could at the junior high in the afternoon before we headed out.

I picked Jason up at his house in Atkins and we made our way to the Wyndham Riverfront in Little Rock. He was super anxious to get to a liquor store, so we drove to a pretty big one about half a mile away, then came back to the hotel for dinner. We all agreed to go downstairs to the steakhouse in the lobby, which actually turned out surprisingly nice. They had an “early bird special” for a buy one, get one free entree, and I decided to get two entrees for myself since the district was buying. So it was two 8oz medium rare filets with carrots, a giant baked potato, and a bowl of butter, sour cream, and cheese of equal mass for me. They increased the district reimbursement to $40, so I paid a grand total of $1.57 plus tip for my meal, plus nearly a whole pecan crusted salmon filet between Heather and Jason’s leftovers.

After dinner, we mostly split up, but Gary came back to my room to have a couple drinks with me. We ended up going out into the courtyard and met up with Dale, and the three of us chatted around a propane fire table for a few hours. An older couple came out and sat with us for a while, and ended up talking a lot of history and politics with Dale, which proved to be super entertaining for all. It was a really great night, and the weather was just perfect out there.

We eventually had to part ways so we could get some sleep before the classes in the morning, but I think it’s going to be a really great conference.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un would NEVER go for that!

Dish It

Summer went home to do some house work and prepare to receive the girls while I hung out at home for a while. I played some Overwatch with Clint, then a couple of rounds of solo ranked Rocket League before getting the kitchen cleaned up a bit.

Eventually I got showered and went to my parents’ house to pick up some bánh gìo that Mom made, then went to Summer’s for dinner. She made some slow cooker beef and broccoli, then we shared a cupcake before I headed back home for the evening.

Super digging the synthwave tonight.

Instant Frustration

I got up this morning and watched as the whole day burned away. I did motivate myself enough briefly to clean up after the cats and do a partial water change in the aquarium, but otherwise we just laid around all day long. Summer picked up some Wendy’s for lunch on her way back from the gym. Then I started the old family classic Blazing Saddles half jokingly while she was in the shower, but we actually managed to finish it.

After the girls left with their father for the night, I tried making some chicken as my first meal in the Instant Pot Ultra. I didn’t realize the rice would cook so quickly and keep the water from boiling and building up pressure, so what I thought was going to be a 10-minute meal ended up being a multiple-hour shit show that ended with me transferring the entire thing to a couple of glass dishes to bake in the oven. Luckly the food wasn’t completely ruined and we could eat it for a super late dinner, but by that point I was so tired, hungry, cranky, and frustrated that I was just exhausted from dealing with it in the first place. Even cooking that meal the traditional way only takes about 45 minutes.

Can’t you see that that man is a nih?

No, G like Zebra.

We woke up surprisingly early today for not having any early arrangements. The girls went home to clean up while I did the same here, and then I picked them up to go to La Huerta for a smallish lunch. We ended up splitting some fajitas three ways because Autumn can’t eat any food with more than two ingredients. I still ended up eating too much somehow.

The weather was nice and Eaddie wanted to go to the park for a bit before meeting up with my family, so we went to my house to get a frisbee, and I also dug out my old Foxtail to throw around. We ended up at Oakland since it was just on the way to my parents’ house anyway, and played until my parents texted that Uncle Giao had just showed up. They brought both kids along, and they ended up playing with the girls a little while we were there.

Eaddie and I had to run across town to get some guacamole that we didn’t end up eating, and we picked up Bác Vân to bring her along as well. We ate and visited for a little bit, but I got super tired and lethargic. Summer took Autumn to her parents’ house to stay the night, and eventually we headed back home for the evening. Eaddie really wanted to start the old Superman movie, but we didn’t get very far. I haven’t seen those movies in years though, so it’ll be nice to revisit.

Here’s to a long night’s sleep.

Cascading Closures

I got on a bit of a roll today in spite of testing taking up a good portion of my morning. I felt a little lost, but just kept pushing through closing work orders, and finally got to close a few that were stacked with multiple requests. I finally feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I grabbed lunch on the way between campuses and got cheese sticks and a drink from Sonic, then a salad and chili at Wendy’s, all for around four bucks.

Once I wrapped up at work, Autumn came to find me and we went back to my house so I could tend to the fish and fill the bike up with gas before taking her home. Summer made her pork chops again, and doubled up on carbs to make up for the last time. Everyone seemed to really like it, which is rare with the kids. Then we played a game of Uno before I headed home for the night.

Now if only I could get to a zero-inbox.

Dogs are basically just really smart babies.

We slept in pretty late today, and I was worried it would keep me from falling asleep tonight, but after feeling sleepy all afternoon, I don’t think it’ll be much of a problem.

Summer went home to start some laundry and clean up the house while I got showered. Then I went to pick her up to go to Denny’s for an afternoon breakfast/lunch. We both ate way too much, but aside from receiving the completely wrong burger, the food was delicious. Our server was super weird, but cool. I highly recommend the Loaded Nacho Tots, and it’s basically a meal by itself.

Next we ran to my parents’ house to help Dad cover the pool. We didn’t stick around too long though, partly because I started getting really sleepy, but mostly because Summer needed to go to Walmart to pick up a baby shower gift for Isabelle. I told her I wanted to get something cow related that would last and not just get thrown away after a year or two, and suggested it should be a dog toy for its durability and cleanability. She glared at me with judging eyes, but she would soon see the way. She picked out a few limited-use things, and then we headed to Tractor Supply Company for the good stuff.

As soon as we walked in, she spotted a plush cow that she said looked perfect. It had multiple squeakers and was filled with noisy, crinkly filling in its extremities – all things a baby would love. That’s when she noticed the tough rope lining the edges. She had picked out a dog tug toy. Adorable and durable, and perfect in every way. Nevermind the K9 TUFF-GUARD badge sewn into it. The kid’s gonna love it, and I will maintain my reputation for being terrible with children.

A quick stop at Dollar General later, and we were back at her house to receive the girls. Once they got home, I headed home to start some laundry myself. I started digging around for supplies to better care for my ailing betta, but the water will need some time to stabilize anyway. I’m not sure how much good it will do, but I guess I should keep trying.

Shit, I really am the new phone guy. And sign guy. And SCCM package guy. Let’s kick this on-the-job learning into overdrive.

Arm Day Recovery

Last night and some of this morning, my arms were super sore from the ride to Fayetteville. I haven’t had a passenger along for a ride like that in so many years, and it really changes the entire experience. I had such a blast, but I was dead. Sleeping late helped a bunch. I eventually got around and cleaned my fish tank and took a shower. Shortly thereafter, Summer and Noah showed up to go to their 5k in Clarksville.

I hadn’t eaten much of anything all day, so we stopped at McDonald’s in Clarksville before I dropped them off to race. Then we drove to a couple different places because we weren’t entirely sure where the event was held. Eventually we found it at Cline Park, and it looked to be a pretty small turnout. Summer ran up to the registration pavilion while everyone was lined up ready to race. The girl on the microphone didn’t seem to have any idea how to describe the route to the runners, and eventually just told everyone to follow the person in front of them. Just as the runners took off, Summer ran back to the car and dumped their bags off with me and then took off with Noah. Curious, I looked up how many calories they would burn in the race. I estimated around 600 for both of them combined. Meanwhile, I was sat in the car with my Big Mac and caramel frappé clocking in at roughly 1,210 calories.

After I finished eating and the first couple runners finished, I started to wander around a bit. It only took them about 20 minutes, and I figured Summer wouldn’t be too far behind, so I posted up in the back of my car. A minute or two before she came along, I happened to look at their bags and pulled her race number off and then handed it to her as she ran by. She finished and then came back to the car to wait for Noah. After a few minutes she decided to walk backwards down the track with his number to find him and then finish the race together.

He was upset because one of the signs had fallen over and he ended up running what he estimated to be an additional mile before being pointed back the right direction. I guess he wasn’t the only one, but nobody seemed to be up in arms about it at the finish line. He was pretty upset though, so I took it upon myself to make him a Genuine, Legitimate Award for the Longest Distance Run on a McDonald’s napkin. Summer took it up to the officials, and they actually signed the napkin and announced him as a winner along with Summer’s second place trophy in her division.

Just before everyone had finished, I recognized Ashley walking across the finish line. I wasn’t positive it was her since it was so dark, so I texted her asking if it was her, and then she walked up to me and said she was wondering the same thing. She said she’s working at DHS in Clarksville now, but I haven’t seen her since Apex, so it was nice to catch up.

Once the race was over, we went to La Taquiza Chilanga for some street tacos al pastor, which was delicious as usual. Noah kept insisting he didn’t want to eat and sucked down a Mexican Coca-Cola instead, but eventually he ate three of them. Then Summer got a cinnamon thing, and I had an absolutely terrible excuse for a mangonada. I guess I’ll stick with the tacos next time.

From there we headed home. I dropped Noah off at his house, and then Summer and I headed back to my place where she showered while I dug around in my aquarium supplies box. I couldn’t find the tiny heater I possibly imagined owning, but at least the box and random power cords got properly organized. Summer got out of the shower and then passed out on the couch, so I sent her to bed while I read up on the Bird scooters I’ve seen pop up in town practically overnight. I briefly fantasized about becoming a charger, but I’m not convinced it’s worth driving around to find them and then getting up two hours earlier just to put them back out in the wild.
