Walking the Land

I went to the shop first thing this morning because I wasn’t certain of Jason’s plans. It ended up being unnecessary, but at least I got to see Brice sitting around eating breakfast after being out for the past couple weeks.

I rolled into the high school and jumped right into things, finally making it out to the multipurpose facility to check on some things. Eventually I made it inside to start closing work orders, and I did a fair job of catching up. There’s still a lot to do, but at least it feels achievable. Lunchtime came around out of nowhere, so I went to Arby’s for a quick meal before coming back early and diving right back in.

If nothing else, today served to better familiarize myself with the layout of the campus. There is still a ton of unexplored territory, and a surprising number of young teachers of questionable caliber. I suppose time will tell, but I had such hopes. I guess statistically I really haven’t had to visit that many rooms to hook everything up from scratch.

After staying late to take care of a couple things at the MPF, I headed home to cool off. It was incredibly hot and humid today, and I was surprised to see the Hickey pool closed and partly drained. Beth was in town for their father’s birthday, but it wasn’t long before Summer said they were leaving their parents’ house and wanted to go to Stoby’s for dinner.

Dinner was uneventful aside from my taco salad that was served with a paltry smattering of chips. Beth took the girls home while I went to the junior high to snag an old discarded switch to set up at Summer’s shop. It didn’t take long at all to get them set back up, and everything was working again. It kind of really made me want to pursue a real IT job with them, but I don’t really know enough about their existing business structure and Summer’s too busy trying to hold onto the reigns of her own position.

Finally home for the evening, I spent too much time browsing cheap Chinese goods that I’ve been meaning to buy for too long. I got a small order out, so in a few months I’ll have a surprise delivery that I’ve forgotten all about.

I wonder what a real IT job is like.

Church Rush

I couldn’t sleep very late this morning, possibly because of how bright it got in my room. I was still pretty tired though, so we laid around for a while before I got up and around. Summer headed out first while I got showered and everything, and then I went to pick her up for lunch. I hate going out on Sundays because of how busy everybody is, and the fact that many restaurants raise their prices for it. Chinese did sound good though, so we landed at New China where it actually didn’t seem that bad. I ran into Ian there, which got the adrenaline going a bit, but it was still good to see him.

We went back to Summer’s for a bit after we ate, and didn’t get back out until we had to go to Harbor Freight. Summer needed some things for the shop, so I brought the coupon game. The girls’ father dropped them off for us there, so we got to split the transaction three ways for maximum savings. I didn’t really get anything I wanted, but nothing I wanted was very urgent anyway. From there we went to Lowe’s so Summer could look for a shop vac and so I could pick up some paver stones on which to park the sailboat so the tires won’t keep sinking into the earth.

Lastly we stopped by Walmart so the girls could pick up a last couple school supplies, and then we went back to their house so they could do some cleaning before dinner. I fried up some chicken for them to make sandwiches, and then I headed home to do some more laundry before the first week of school. Thankfully I think I’ve gotten most of the mentally draining stuff out of the way, so tomorrow I should just be able to crush the bulk of my work orders. I’m still not looking forward to re-running cable for Ethan, but I fully plan on enlisting his help for that.

They’re like tiny machines that turn spinach into poop.

A Laundry List

We got up pretty early this morning after some storming last night. Summer went to get bread for French toast and ended up at the shop because they lost a bunch of equipment due to a power surge or lightning strike. Eaddie and I watched some Daredevil until she got back, and then after breakfast I went back to the shop with her to see if I could be of any help.

I found a few bad ethernet ports on several pieces of equipment, and swapped things around enough to get them limping. It was hot though, and I needed a shower, so I went home to get ready. We were going to go to Conway to go shopping, but by the time Summer got rid of the girls and was ready to go, I decided it was too late and started some laundry instead. It’ll free up tomorrow having so much of it done, which will be nice as the last weekend before school starts.

Summer eventually came over but didn’t feel like getting out for dinner, so I went to eat with my parents by myself. When I got back, we were both so tired that we called it an early night and went to bed.

Shopping for stuff from China is always so fun!

OSHA Training, but Without the Jokes

I had to get up another 30 minutes earlier to make it to the back-to-school breakfast this morning. I think they had more tables this year, so it felt less cramped. Amanda beat us all there and saved a table. The food was quite a bit better than what we’ve had in the past. Summer and Ben came as sponsors and gave everyone free oil change coupons. I was sad that Ben hogged the mic the whole time and I didn’t get to hear her sing our praises.

Afterward the ceremony was pretty standard fare. The supers got up and told us not to speak ill of our superiors. We had another live OSHA training, but this time it was a younger guy that seemed like a nervous wreck to be up on stage. He got us through an hour of training in like 30 minutes, presumably by cutting all of the racist jokes.

Zach chose Morelos for lunch, so we fought traffic to get over there. I wasn’t hungry, but I still managed a whole order of fajitas because they were the day’s special. I really wish I hadn’t.

When I got back from lunch, I spent most of my time waiting on progress bars, trying to get a computer imaged. I don’t know what the problems were, but it never got much better. I ended up staying like four hours late just trying to get software installed. At that point I had just enough time to get home and clean up a few things before I had to head towards Summer’s for the evening.

I stopped by Walgreens to pick up blood pressure medicine and bacon for the morning, and cleaned up some leftover pizza before watching Daredevil with Eaddie. Then it was finally off to bed, with no early morning requirements.

Flogging will continue until morale improves.

An Actual Day of Progress

I got to spend the whole day at the high school, and felt quite a bit of progress for it. The work orders are still flowing in, but at least it doesn’t feel like I’m still sinking. I got stuck on a couple more difficult tasks, but even then I felt like I made a little bit of progress and got to affirm things I’ve learned over the last year or so. I worked through lunch time feeling pretty good, and eventually went to Wendy’s for a relatively light meal. I did have to give up on some SCCM stuff in the afternoon, and went back to the shop so Gary could learn me a few things. I probably should have known what he showed me, but it was just one of those things that never even occurred to me.

After work, I came home for a little while before heading up to Summer’s for dinner. They wanted chicken sandwiches, but all I wanted to do was get rid of all the old stuff she had in the fridge. I almost burned the house down trying to toast some French bread in the broiler, but they got their sandwiches. I warmed up some soft taco stuff and cleaned up a bunch of the leftovers, but there’s still enough food for a week in there.

Eaddie and I finished our episode of Daredevil from the other day, and then I headed home for an early night. It’s time for welcome-back nonsense tomorrow, and nobody seems as concerned about how much work they’re putting on us at the last minute as us. Typical.

It’s less stressful if you don’t actually care.

The Rhoids Are Back in Town

We were supposed to get today in our buildings, but Jason called us to the shop instead. He had me take a person to Oakland to do Brice’s work orders all morning, which really wasn’t that bad but I resented anyway. Amanda volunteered and we just cleaned up what we could in the time we had. I wish I had gotten to spend more time with the people I’ll miss, but a lot of it ended up being new teachers that I’ve never met before and won’t be supporting for the foreseeable future.

I dropped Amanda off at the shop for lunch, and Allen invited me to meet him at KFC. Surprisingly I wasn’t really that hungry, but I went anyway. I wish I had the self control at the time to just order something small instead of getting the buffet as usual. I guess I need to do the survey on my receipt for the freebie for next time. That’ll be a whole lot less guilt.

After lunch I finally got to spend some time at the high school, but the first little bit of that was setting up new keypads for the cafeteria. I got them hooked up but couldn’t set them up because nobody was around that could identify line numbers for me. A problem for another day, I suppose. After that I started digging into my work orders, but they kept coming in faster than I could close them. It’s such a big campus too, so I feel like I’m always running so far out only to have to come back for something else. I foresee a hoverboard in my future. I ended up staying super late trying to fix a couple persistently annoying things, but it didn’t help. I’ll still be at it all day tomorrow.

When I finally got home, I had to clean all of the aquariums. When I took the water out to the garden, I saw that Bác Vân had trimmed over the mint I planted in the garden, which made me sad. Hopefully the rhizome is still in good shape so it can come back next year. I got the water changes done but still didn’t get everything else done around the house that I needed to. Focus probably isn’t so much the problem right now as prioritization. Memory seems bad too. Could probably use a reboot.

Weave my allegorical elegy.

A Learnful Day

It was hot today, but I still wanted to get out on the bike. We started off building some more carts to shuffle around at the middle school. Amanda was pretty annoyed that we seemed to be doing things in a more complicated, convoluted way than she originally planned. I don’t think anyone was surprised. Zach peeled Gary and me off of the job after the first delivery since we were overstaffed for the task as usual. Gary helped me look at a couple things I had in the queue until lunch time, and then as he left to eat, I got tied up on the phone with Erica looking at some of their work orders. I decided to swing by there to see what they were doing for lunch, and Sheri ended up surprising me by buying me a nacho supreme from Taco Villa.

After I ate, I headed back to the shop and went to the server room with Gary. I got to set up three of the new servers under his direction. I only barely understood what was really going on, but it was still nice to get some hands-on and see a bit of what goes on behind the scenes. Afterward we went to the high school to take care of some work orders. I didn’t think I really needed the help necessarily, but he ended up being super handy to have around. I got to build a little more rapport with some of the faces I see more often, which was nice. I worked a little late, but felt good with what I had gotten done.

Shortly after I got home, Summer and Eaddie came over to ride bikes. I met them at Hickey Park on the Grom so Summer could practice riding around a bit more. She seemed to get a better grasp on her launches, so I had her start slaloming for the rest of the evening to get a feel for turning and curves. I wish I had started out more like this instead of the trial by fire. When we got back from that, they headed straight home to clean up, and I pretty much immediately started winding down. It was a pretty good day all around, so I figured an early night to bed would be best.

We’ll use his vehicle stipend as a unit of measurement!

It’s a Match?

Allen and I were sent off to do some finishing work at Crawford today. Evidently Jason had trouble toning out a line the other day, so I had to do it. The second task was to set up a touch USB line over Cat-5, and it was actually already set up, but plugged into the wrong port. All of that took us until lunch time, but I think most of the truly heavy lifting was giving relationship advice to Allen.

The two of us went to Wind Taste for lunch, so I’ll owe him lunch again. Then the afternoon was spent with Jason cleaning up and rearranging rooms at Center Valley. They got new cubbies and cabinets in several of the rooms, which necessitated some cable relocation. We were overstaffed with three, and with Jason we didn’t even have all of the equipment we needed in one trip, so I had to run back to town once, and then we’ll have to go again tomorrow.

After work, I rode home and waited for Summer to drop Eaddie off, and we watched a couple episodes of Daredevil. When Summer got back from the gym, we went to my parents’ house for dinner, and that pretty well burned up the last bit of the day. Eaddie and I finished the evening with one more episode, and then it was bedtime.

As I started my evening routine, I noticed an email from match.com confirming a new account setup. Having never even visited the site before, my internal alarms started going off, and I immediately went through the process of “forgetting” the password so I could gain control of the account. There didn’t seem to be any profile information there, and it wasn’t even set up with my name – only my email address. Evidently I was a male seeking another male in Colorado. Once I gained control of the rogue account, I shut it down and went on to bed. I have to admit I was a little curious what would have happened if I had left it open for a day, because it appeared as though they require some kind of review process before anything is actually posted to your profile, so it’s possible there was some information provided for it. I’m fine with not existing as a weird, gay impostor on the internet.

This is a weird form of identity theft.

Geoffrey the Friendly Zombie

When we got up this morning, Summer got the girls ready to leave with their father and I went home to clean up. I messed around with the aquariums a little first though, and I seem to be missing my last big gold mystery snail. I can’t find it in the tank anywhere, and every time this has happened before they’ve ended up dead. I wish I knew why, because this one always seemed quite active.

Once out of the shower, I headed back to get Summer, and we met Travis, John, and Melissa at La Huerta for lunch. It was John’s birthday, so he got to wear the Panchito hat. It was even funnier because his family came in with their kids and sat right behind us. I was surprised to see they made their own fresh tortillas there, so we’ll have to go back more on account of the deliciosity.

We were a bit early for our escape room, so we chatted outside under a pun tree for a while. Once we got in, we suited up with our flag football belts to prepare for the zombie actor experience. I was a little overly worried about moving too quickly through the room after what the hostess said, and I think overall I would have preferred the event without the actor, but it did make for an entertaining visit with the group. Overall it was a really good time, though I felt bad for the guy in the rubber mask. I thought for sure it would be makeup, but no such luck. He ended up helping us on a couple clues, possibly because the hour was just too much for him.

We beat the room with just a few minutes remaining, and then went our separate ways. Summer and I cleaned up a bit at her house and then headed back to my place to practice riding the Grom, but Mom texted with spaghetti and we had dinner instead. I hit a wall of exhaustion while we were there, but woke up enough for a couple chores before bed.

Oh, I only have to clean up everything.

Gotta Spend Money to Save Money

I slept in a bit this morning since Summer had to work. When I got up, I made some tacos out of leftover beans, cheese, and veggies, and then the girls and I watched an episode of Jessica Jones. After that, I headed home to clean up before Summer got home. I ended up having to do some water changes in a couple of the aquariums, and I think one of my black skirt tetras that got stuck in Spongebob’s pineapple window may be on its way out. I guess they are pretty old by now, since I got them second-hand about five years ago. I don’t have a clue how old they were when I got them from the random Redditor.

As soon as I was cleaned up and ready, I headed up to Summer’s with my mango tree since it seemed not to be doing so well since my air conditioner was replaced. They walked out the door as soon as I got there, so we didn’t waste any time getting to Conway.

I had $30 in rewards to use at Dick’s, so we picked up a paddle for Summer’s kayak, then went on down the strip to let the girls do some back to school shopping. It was the start of the tax-free weekend, so Summer picked up quite a bit of stuff for them. By the end of it all, we were all pretty hungry and agreed on Golden Corral for dinner. We all stuffed ourselves and then headed out for one last stop.

We dropped the girls off at Books-A-Million to let them wander through that shopping center while we went to Sam’s. I wanted to pick up some hanging shop lights for the garage since it’s incredibly dark out there. I may have gotten too many, but it will be nice to have when I need it. We made one last stop at PetCo to check on their shrimp inventory before heading back home.

Summer and Autumn went straight to bed while Eaddie and I finished up the first season of Jessica Jones. Then we got one episode of Daredevil season 2 in before Eaddie was too tired to go on.

I mean, why not just “Snuffcarcass?”
